Domain, hosting and business email: what is the difference?

By Ten Tech team ·

Three things every website needs, explained in plain language, and why you can buy them separately or together.

People often use these words as if they mean the same thing. They are three separate services that work together.

The domain is your address

A domain such as yourbrand.com is the name people type. You register it for one or more years. On its own it does not show a website; it points to the servers that do.

Hosting is where your website lives

Web hosting is space on a server that stores your website files and shows them to visitors. Our hosting plans come with cPanel, free SSL certificates and email accounts. Choose by how many websites you need:

  • Single Domain Linux Hosting: one website.
  • Multi Domain Linux Hosting: several websites in one account.
  • Reseller Linux Hosting: for agencies that host their own clients.
  • Dedicated server: for large or busy sites.

Business email uses your domain

Email such as hello@yourbrand.com looks more professional than a free address and stays yours if staff change. You can use the email included in a hosting plan, or a separate Business Email plan with mailboxes that do not depend on your website server.

How they connect

Name servers on your domain decide where the domain points. When you buy hosting from us for a domain you already own, we tell you which name servers to use, or you can change them yourself in the client area under My services.

One rule to know

Each hosting or email plan is linked to one domain, and our provider allows only one plan of each type per domain. If a domain already has hosting somewhere else, choose a different domain or a subdomain such as shop.yourbrand.com, or cancel the old plan first.
