How to choose a domain name for your business

By Ten Tech team ·

Short, easy to spell and matched to where your customers are: a practical checklist before you register.

Your domain name is the address customers type, share and remember. Changing it later means new email addresses, new printed material and lost search rankings, so it is worth a few minutes of thought.

Keep it short and easy to say

Aim for something people can spell after hearing it once. Avoid hyphens and numbers unless they are part of your brand. If you have to explain it on the phone, it is too complicated.

Pick the right extension

  • .com is still the most recognised everywhere.
  • Country extensions such as .com.np, .ae or .us tell customers you serve that market, and some have eligibility rules. For example, .us needs a real connection to the United States.
  • Newer extensions such as .online, .store or .tech can work well when the .com is taken, as long as the name still reads clearly.

Check before you buy

  • Search the name on social networks so you can use the same handle everywhere.
  • Make sure it is not someone else's trademark.
  • Consider registering common misspellings or the .com alongside your local extension to protect your brand.

Register it in your own name

The domain should be registered with your business as the registrant, not a freelancer or agency. When you buy through our client area, the domain is registered under your own contact details and you can manage name servers, transfer lock and privacy yourself.

Remember to renew

Domains are rented by the year. Put the expiry date in your calendar. We also send reminders before every renewal is due, but an expired domain can be lost for good.
